Hyperhidrosis, the medical term for excessive sweating, is a common chronic condition. Patients with hyperhidrosis produce an amount of sweat that far exceeds the physiologic amount needed to regulate body temperature. More frequently developing in early adulthood, the underlying cause of this condition has not been determined but often there is a family history of the disorder. Hyperhidrosis commonly affects the underarm sweat glands, but can also affect the palms of the hands or the feet. Stress, emotion, or exercise, may exacerbate hyperhidrosis but it may occur for no apparent reason.
BOTOX® or Dysport® for Hyperhidrosis
Depending on its severity and the area affected, treatment for hyperhidrosis may require one or more approaches. Drying liquids, powders, ointments, oral medication, and electrical stimulation are often tried first. The effects are temporary, however, and may last for just a few hours or up to a week. BOTOX® or Dysport® injection is a minimally invasive treatment to help patients with severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating) inadequately managed with topical agents. This treatment may last several months.
