What is microneedling?Microneedling is a skin rejuvenation treatment for the improvement of fine lines, wrinkles, elasticity, tone, texture and scarring. By penetrating the skin with tiny needles, creating microscopic channels into the dermal layer, we stimulate the body’s natural healing processes to regenerate collagen and elastin.
What are the advantages of microneedling over other treatments such as lasers or chemical peels?Microneedling offers the following advantages over other rejuvenation treatments:
· Shorter downtime with no peeling or shedding of skin. Make-up can be applied 3-4 hours after treatment. You can also resume your normal exercise routine immediately without worry of trapping sweat under a layer of dead skin.
· Suitable for all skin types, including darker skin tones.
· Long lasting effects with minimal investment.
Does microneedling improve the appearance of scars?Yes! The fine needles penetrate the scar tissue, leading to a breakdown of the structure of the scar and stimulating the formation of new collagen. Microneedling can be used to improve raised or hypertrophic scars(such as surgical scars), depressed or atrophic scars (such as acne scars), and stretch marks or striae.
More than one treatment is typically needed. Over the course of a series of treatments, the scar will become flatter, softer, and more evenly toned. Redness will fade and tension in the scar will be reduced.
What can I expect at my treatment? We begin by cleansing the skin and then applying a topical anesthetic for maximum comfort during the procedure. After 15-20 minutes, the topical anesthetic will be removed and the skin will be disinfected. The needling itself will take 20-30 minutes.
What can I expect after microneedling? You can expect the treatment area to be red with some pin-point bleeding. You may experience some crusting immediately after treatment. The redness will subside over time and the crusting usually resolves once the channels close completely and the skin is cleansed. You may apply make-up 3-4 hours after treatment to conceal any residual redness you may have.
You must protect your treated skin from the sun! Apply a good sunscreen - we recommend EltaMD UV Daily Broad Spectrum SPF 40, available in our office - and wear protective clothing!
